Easy Door Wreath!

Here is the wreath I made for our front door today...cost $4, took 30 minutes. Seriously. I had a foam ring from the dollar store, two spools of grosgrain ribbon from the thrift store, a box of white thumbtacks, cardstock and nail polish. Oh, and a box of glue dots. I wrapped the ring with the ribbon, securing with thumbtacks, added more thumbtacks all over to look like polka dots. I was going to leave it like that (top photo), but it seemed too plain, so I cut some circles out of cardstock, painted with various colors of nail polish that I had, and attached them to the thumbtacks with glue dots. I added a ribbon loop to hang it with and voila...door wreath!

Girlfriends Retreat: Sleepless in Ridgecrest

Just got back from the Girlfriends! (sigh...oh, alright...'say what?') retreat. It was a great/fun/exciting/dramatic/long/Wonder Full weekend where I got to spend time with 74 fabulous women in ways I would never have imagined (penguin huddle!), got closer to God but way too close to nature, and I admit it, I got kinda comfy outside of my shell. I'm glad to be home, but already miss the GF's! Many thanks to the hardworking GAB team...looking forward to the next one!

The real gift was sneaking it into his office so it was a surprise on his desk when he came back from lunch...tee hee!

Family Time - Christmas

We spent Christmas with the Wilson family - my mom and dad and my brother, sister in law and my niece. We had all three of our children, too. And the dog.

I've never made a Christmas dinner for ten people before, but it turns out you just add a little more food than when you cook for five and it isn't any harder. Seating ten people is the hard part, but we squeezed everyone in. Christa put together all the place settings - printed napkin rings glued to paper towel tube sections, printed place cards glued to popsicle sticks propped up in candy-filled cupcake liners. They turned out cute!

Fridge Faces!

I had this idea after picking up a sheet of magnetic locker wallpaper at the thrift store. I am making these for my 4 yr old neice as a stocking stuffer. Fun, no? I just painted some recycled paper (kind of heavy, not quite cardstock), then Mod Podged it to the magnetic backing and cut out the shapes. Voila! Fridge Faces! What's that? You would like some Fridge Faces, too? Here you go...CLICKY CLICKY!

Family Time - Thanksgiving in KY...Brrrrrr.....

We took a long drive for a short visit in KY over Thanksgiving to see my sweetie's family. The boys were all decked out to go hunting, but it poured down rain, so no venison for us. (I am not sad about that.) It snowed overnight, so we had a white day-after-Thanksgiving!

Holiday Gift Tag Tree

I know it's early for Christmas decorations, but I can't help myself. This one is SO EASY, I had to share it with you:

Start with a vase you already have. Clip a few bare tree branches out of the yard. Spray paint them white. Arrange in vase. Add rocks, beads, or -like I did - marbles to keep the branches in place. Hang your handcrafted gift tags on the branches.

As you can see from the chaos shown in the second photo, I made a simple gift tag design out of old manila file folders, then used old greeting cards, scrap paper, embellishments and ribbon to decorate. Use a hole punch for the top, tie on a hanging ribbon and voila! Easy peasy!

Of course if you don't feel like making gift tags for your tree - or your Christmas gifts - you can get some HERE. I am making them as promo items to include with my Ebay sales, and can make extras to order. They are all different, but I can try to make them in specific colors if you have a preference.

Easy Recycled Wreath

I made this recycled wreath after reading this tutorial - so easy! I didn't use toilet paper tubes because, gross, they had toilet paper on them and I am a freak about germs, but I did have a couple of wrapping paper tubes so I used those, then I had some corrogated cardboard sheets that came from a dresser-in-a-box as packing material so I used that too to add some texture. Voila!

This is as close as I get to dressing a dog...

Recycled Paddle Ball

I didn't want to throw away this paddle ball when the ball broke off of it, so I repurposed it into a girlie hand mirror. I used stuff I already had - nail polish, dollar store poster paint, beads from a yard sale, fabric puffy paint and a mirror out of a used up makeup compact. Cute, no?

What the heck? I didn't get anything done! Didn't take any pictures of summer fun for the Christmas calendar! Didn't finish landscaping the back yard....wait, didn't START landscaping the backyard! The garden died before I could harvest anything! Aaaaack!!!!

Well, the boys are back in school, Christa is back in Florida and things are back to regular schedule - yell at the boys to get up, yell at the boys to shower and get dressed, yell at the boys to do their homework...hey, I see a pattern here.

Between all the yelling, we're planning some fun...starting with the 7:25 screening of Inception at Cinebarre tomorrow night. Yay for movies where food is brought to you! Then we'll be at the Grape Stomping Festival on James Island....squishy!

Kid's Room Makeover, Part Deux

To be perfectly fair, my sweetie had to work MUCH harder to spruce up Caymon's room than I did in Christa's room. I wish I had 'before' and 'after' photos, but if you can imagine this room with plain white walls, then picture the walls covered in mysterious stains, scribbles, thumbtack holes, marks and dings. Add about 50 pounds of trash to the room. There. That's the 'before'. Here is the 'after', with new bedding, paint, chair rail molding, window blinds and wall decals. Pretty sweet....

There's a Girl in the House!!!

Christa is on her way to stay with us. I am so excited about having a girl back in the house! I spent most of the day dolling up her room with a bunch of chick stuff....

The magnetic board was at a yard sale this morning for three dollars - eeeek!!! - and I had made fancy clothespins forever ago, then didn't know what to do with them, so I cut up one of those advertisement fridge magnets and glue-gunned the pieces to the back of the clothespins and - voila! - a place for her to hang her artwork.

'Dream' is spelled out in bottlecaps that I had decorated with decoupage and clear glitter nail polish. I had a plan at one time to make a giant set of these to post messages on the fridge, but got tired of it. I managed to scrape together one word for this board out of the ones that I made.

That wreath is made of rolled up magazine pages, which were then glue-gunned to two embroidery hoops attached to each other with wired ribbon. The ribbon made a hanging loop in the back as well.

The mobile is made of another embroidery hoop painted white, then I attached some clearance-rack paper cutouts from Michaels with twine. I used beads to keep the paper cutouts from moving once I spaced them out. Fun, yes?

Recycled Wreath

Can you guess what this recycled wreath is made from? Hint: it cost me a whole dollar to make it.

Supplies:

30 or so plastic grocery bags

Foam wreath ring from the dollar store

Glue - I didn't use this, but I recommend it

I cut the grocery bags into about 6" squares, took a knitting needle (but you could use a paintbrush handle or orange peeler handle or anything like that) and pressed the center of each square about an inch or two into the foam wreath so the middle of the square would stick inside the foam and the edges would bunch up. I would recommend using a dab of glue to hold each square in place, because when I was fluffing it up at the end, some of the pieces started to come out and I had to push them back in again. I put all the pieces really close together, covered the whole thing like that and fluffed it up when I was done. To hang it up, I had a spool of silver twist-tie wire that I bought on clearance forever ago at the craft store; I looped it around the wreath - it went right between the plastic so you can't see it - and twisted a small loop in the back from the ends to hang it from. Voila! One dollar wreath!

I actually saw this on another website a month or so ago, but it took me so long to do it, that I forgot where I saw it. Thank you for the idea, website whose name I have forgotten! Thank you!

Our date night at Bottles 'N Brushes was a blast! We painted "Lonely Boat", with two very different - yet equally awesome! - results. Our artist, James, was a great instructor and we would definitely plan another visit in the near future.

Family Time: Blackbeard's Cove

We took the boys to the Haunted Trail of Terror at Blackbeard's Cove last weekend - pretty cool, except we got halfway through the trail before we realized they hadn't opened it yet. Oops. Well, they advertised the start time at 7pm and it was past that, so what the heck?!? So we went back to the front and waited and went through a second time after a big scary guy walked up to the gate, went over the rules and let us in.

It's pretty good; they have a lot of different scenes set up with actors in character to scare the crap out of you. One character chases you from their scene to the next one to keep you moving so you don't hold up the line. I would have posted some photos here, but we weren't allowed to take any....sooooo.....you'll just have to check it out for yourself!

Caymon is 14 years old today. Old enough to get a job here in the great state of South Carolina. Heh, heh. We took the boys and their friend Aaron to Wild Wings, then home for cake and cards and call the family to thank them, then FINALLY open his present - a PS3 game system with games and a stand with neon lighting. Pretty sweet.

Here are the best deals I could find for the week:

Bi-Lo -

Ball Park Franks are BOGO for $1.65 each - $1 off two coupon making them $1.15 each. Then Bi-Lo will issue a $1 instant register reward when you purchase Ball Park Franks plus 3 Pillsbury Crescent Rolls at 3/$6. So, using a printable coupon for 50 cents off two Crescent Rolls from Coupons.com, that makes them $1.50 each. But WAIT! Bi-Lo doubles coupons up to (I think) 65 cents, so that makes them $1.33 each. Awesome.

Yoplait, 50 cents each - 50 cents off 6 coupon doubled = $2.00 for 6
Fudgsicles BOGO, $2 each

I pull every coupon from in-store displays that I see to use later and always request free samples which come with higher-value coupons than you find in the newspaper. Here's a site you can check before dining out, provided by the nonprofit Green Restaurant Association. Just type in your zip code for a list of ecofriendly restaurants in your area. The GRA has a long list of requirements before a restaurant can be eligible, such as biodegradable take-out packaging, energy efficient appliances and well established recycling practices.

There's a page where restaurant owners can download the requirements and add their establishment to the list, so if you don't see your favorite place on the site, let them know!

Gleaning at Rosebank Farms and Boone Hall

If you are looking for family activities that benefit charity, here's a good one: starting this week, Fields to Families volunteers can glean EVERY Wednesday and Saturday at 9 AM at BOTH Boone Hall and Rosebank Farms. The deadline to sign up is before NOON the day before gleaning. Volunteers will be gleaning the surplus produce donated by these farms, and it will be given to area shelters to feed the homeless.

All volunteers must submit applications for themselves and anyone else in their party, including children, friends and family members who will accompany you.

Summer will be gone before you know it, and the growing season will be over. Bring your registered children with you for an experience they can share with their classmates when they are asked the timeless question “What did you do this summer?”
